Sue Tsai's "The Only Place I Feel Like Me" Poursip Curatorial
All Me For Real!
Standing in the center of an exhibition often makes one feel that they are standing in the midst of an idea. In Sue's previous work we stood in the center of her heart. One shattered, bruised and torn a theme that is still used in "TOPIFLM" (that's a long ass acronym) In this instance, we are invited into her mind which it's filled with grand ideas, aspirations and an uncanny hope/optimism. These qualities make her art doubly special in that it reminds you to smile, better days are surely ahead.
Dream Dream Dream
In the piece "Trust your dreams." We see our tiny hero being whisked away by balloons that appear to be light bulbs while wearing only a astronauts helmet floating towards a starry sky in the middle of the night.
This piece seemly represents the journey of the mind. The notion that one can be carried away to exponential heights by their ideas. So high in fact, that you will be amongst the stars traveling to the moon (hence the astronaut helmet.) The seen also takes place at night. The time when we mostly dream and our deepest desires are raised from the depths of our subconscious.
In "The World is Yours" Piece The same theme is applied. Although in this instance, our astronauts heart is seemingly beating out of their chest. Sue captures the exhilaration of realizing ones dreams and taking a moment to appreciate the heights at which you've risen. The middle finger isn't malicious but rather it is an inspirational "fuck it" to anything that might deter you from accomplishing your goals.
Our hero (gender less) is also decidedly naked; a metaphor perhaps of the honesty and sincerity of those aspirations. In a sense we are all truly naked when it comes to our individual truths.
Mama Said Knock You Out
Sues "Fight for Your Love Piece" can be interpreted as romantic, at the same time I believe the "love" is the desire to attain and conquer. One glove is tattered and worn representing the experience and wisdom of previous bouts with all of life's challenges/ challengers. It is also the left hand used to jab to create space and to feel out new opponents. The right glove is a new glove ready to deliver counter and knockout blows to all new challenges. I suppose if sue was left handed it would've been created in a south paw (lefty) style.
"The Only Place I Feel Like Me" is a beautiful reminder to always as they say in Philly "be in your bag." Your mind is the sanctuary of all your dreams and goals. It's important to be addicted to your aspirations (see the dope piece below) and to constantly add pieces and take away pieces of your identity; constantly creating and evolving into your most perfect self. The only place you should feel like yourself is everywhere your heart and mind truly are. Enveloped in boundless confidence and Self Love.
Congrats to Sue Tsai on Another Successful Showing!
